I am SO, SO excited to spread the word about "Burrow and Hive," a new textile company founded by my long time friend, Newell, and her sister, Sally. Burrow and Hive is rolling out original designs (think abstract, ikat-esque and seashell prints) on everything from pillows, small bags and placemats to scarves that are as luxurious to touch as they are rich in color.

I can already see these being a huge hit as a bridesmaid or wedding gift! How wonderful would it be to give your lovely bridesmaids a completely original scarf that they can use as a throw with their bridesmaid dresses, or on any other cool evening! Did you know that we not only design lovely save the dates and invitations, but coordinating wedding day items as well?? I feel that I am often asked this question (do you design coordinating wedding day items?) and the answer is "yes!"

In fact, we LOVE designing wedding day items, because in our opinion it is the smallest details that really pull everything together and make for a truly unforgettable event!

A BIG congratulations to Raechal and Andrew Ferguson, who were married yesterday up on Vail Mt!! Raechal and Andrew were such an amazingly sweet couple and I can't wait to see all the gorgeous pictures from their big day (coordinated by the ever so talented Jen of I Do Wedding Services in Vail).

Raechal and Andrew wanted a modern wedding with a Colorado twist. Using their white, blue and orange color story, we incorporated in beautifully letterpressed aspen leaf design and wrapped it with a letterpressed birch (actual birch wood!) belly band.

What a fun way to celebrate the 4th of July weekend! Congrats again Raechal and Andrew, I wish you both a wonderful and happy future together :)

Real Wedding - Natalie and Bret

It isn't often that I get to see how my bride and groom's big days turn out once everything comes together. Typically, I see the bits and pieces of stationery items that are ordered and designed and then the rest is left to my imagination :) But... the other week one of my lovely brides, Natalie, emailed me with some photos from her wedding and it made me smile from ear to ear! (Thanks Natalie for sharing!)

I just ADORE so many things about how Natalie's wedding came together and how she incorporated into her every detail pieces from her wedding stationery (the Vail Collection). Everything from the way the place cards were displayed to the gorgeous wedding cake adorned with the Vail Collection design made from icing! LOVE, LOVE, LOVE!!

Wooden Coaster Guest Book

I came across this really cute idea on "A Turtle's Life for Me" where they made wooden coasters out of the cross sections of a small tree trunks. I loved this idea so much and instantly thought of all my Colorado and mountain wedding brides who are looking for fun new ideas to use for their guest books!

How fun would it be to take this same idea, and lay a dozen of these little "coasters" out for people to sign at your wedding, in lieu of a traditional guest book? Then, after the wedding hit them with a coat of wood schlack to seal in the beautiful messages and there you have it! A coaster set filled with the names and messages from all of your nearest and dearest displayed out as a wonderful reminder every time you use them!

What's a girl (or guy) to wear??

These days the protocol for wedding attire is much more of a grey area than it used to be. From formal mountain weddings to casual beach weddings to black tie affairs, who's to know how to dress and more importantly how to let you guests know what to wear??!!

I come across this question all of the time when designing invitations, and I found this bit of information that I found helpful in defining the appropriate attire:

Black tie or black tie optional: this is a cue to your guests that the men should be in a tuxedo or dark suite, and the ladies should wear evening gown or formal dress.
Semi Formal: this indicates that the men should be in a suit or jacket and the ladies should be in an elegant dress or dressy suit.
Cocktail Attire: indicates that the men should wear a dark suit and the ladies a pretty cocktail dress.
Casual Attire: indicates that the men should wear nice pants and a collared shirt and the ladies may wear a simple dress or nice pants.

And if this does not get the attire across, then I also suggest a wedding website that describes the attire in greater detail. And lastly, good old word of mouth!

A couple months ago, I had the pleasure of working with Nikki Gutshall, CEO and Co-founder of www.ChicExecs.com and www.chicBuds.com on her gorgeous wedding! Talk about complete wedding envy... Nikki had it all covered all the way down to the smallest details and I think that the pictures speak for themselves when I say that this wedding was simply stunning!

I (Lilah Paper) had the fun task of working on Nikki's custom programs and custom drink wrapped water bottles and juice cans, using their engagement pictures, shot by Clayton Austin. They turned out so fantastic and are such a fun way to customize your wedding. Check them out, cool, huh?! :) Oh, and aren't the photos by EP Love and Fraley Co. fantastic??!! Table Number Ideas

All too often, table numbers seem to be forgotten and put together at the last minute. BUT... table numbers can be so much more than a printed piece of cardstock! Whenever, I come across adorable ideas that can be incorporated into a tablescape, I just simply must share! Check out some of my favorites, found over on Martha Stewart Weddings (of course!).

OR... of course you could follow the Lilah Paper DIY project featured a couple of months ago and utilize your napkin at a table number AND a menu!

I heart laser-cutting!

Ok, so I am SO excited about this next invitation and I just got back pictures (they are shipping the pieces to me, so this is all I have right now) of how the laser-cut gate turned out! This invitation is such an amazing example of how laser-cutting can really add dimension to an invitation and bring about true meaning to the "big reveal" that gets everyone excited about your wedding!!

I will post pictures once this baby is complete, but for now here is just a teaser. This invitation is going to have coppery, laser-cut, wrought-iron gates with a house (printed on ecru vellum) peeping thru the gate work, as if you are looking thru the actual estate and coming up to the mansion itself! SO cool! Then behind the vellum is the actual invitation using a geometric, honeycomb pattern that can be found on the windows of the home itself.

Menus, Napkins and Table Numbers Oh My!

Menus, table numbers and napkins, all wrapped up in one adorable package!

Learn how to make them yourself using the simple DIY steps below:

WHAT YOU WILL NEED:

1. An image in a digital format scanned or created with a design program.
2. Set of cotton Dinner Napkins (we found ours at Bed, Bath and Beyond).
3. Iron-on transfer paper(can be found at Michaels or Hobby Lobby).
4. A color inkjet printer.
5. Hand iron.
6. A flat, hard, smooth, non-porous ironing surface.
7. A clean soft cloth.

PRINTING YOUR IMAGE:

1. Create your design using a scanned image or on your computer.

2. When you are ready to print your image, follow these steps:

Make sure that you have selected 'Mirror', 'Flip', 'Reverse' or a similar setting in your application, if it is required, so that the image will be printed backwards.

Test by printing your image on a sheet of plain paper. Once you are satisfied with how your image looks, insert a single sheet of iron on transfer paper into your printer and adjust the settings as follows.

In your printer driver, select the highest dpi setting and the correct paper setting for your type of printer: Look for a T-shirt transfer setting.

Set the paper thickness lever on your printer for standard paper.
Print your iron on transfer image.

3. Trim the iron transfer image into two sections, as each section will be ironed separately.

4. Iron on the Transfer

Preheat the iron on its highest temperature setting and make sure that you DO NOT use steam. DO NOT use an ironing board, bare wood, glass, or metal surface for ironing. We used a counter top surface, proteted by a smooth cotton hand towel.

Place the image to be transferred face down on the napkin in the desired position. And press firmly, ironing over the entire surface for 30-45 seconds.

5. Fold your napkin

Enjoy!

Ok, so I have been VERY busy over the last month, working on various different projects, one of which was a photo shoot for Style Me Pretty's "From Inspiration to Reality" project. Lilah Paper teamed up with Kansas City's most talented wedding vendors to create a "wedding" based off of the above style board. Today I want to wish all the mothers out there a very Happy Mother's Day! As a new mother myself, I have gained such a different perspective on motherhood and all of its beautiful sacrifices! You all of a sudden realize that the long nights and the exhausting/demanding schedule that is non-stop, around the clock are worth every second of sleep lost! Because, when your little one locks those sweet eyes with yours, coos and gives you a big, toothless smile that melts your heart everything just falls into place!

However, I have only just brushed the surface of the wonderful adventure called motherhood... still to come are the early-age milestones and then the dreaded teenage years! So, with this newly gained perspective I wanted to show my mother my great appreciation for all that she has done with a Mother's Day brunch. Now I have to say, because this was my first Mother's Day, my incredible and loving husband took my grocery list and brunch menu ideas, and spent the entire morning cooking up the most incredible food and then cleaning the entire celebration once everyone had parted, while I slept in, mingled and enjoyed a much needed mimosa. He is truly a wonderful man! Anyway, I thought I would share some of the pictures, that include some easy, do-it-yourself ideas. Afterall, it is all about the details! I hope that you enjoy and to all the mothers out there... this is your day!

Our sweet little daughter, Ellie Sophia, was born February 18th and she is just perfect in every single way!! So, this post is all about babies and the our amazing photographer Adrienne Maples, who shot her newborn photos on Monday! I got the chance to grab a sneak peak of a few of them (shown above) posted on her facebook page.

Using your inspiration to design your stationery - how we do it?

Ever wonder how an invitation designer uses your bits of inspiration (magazine clippings, fabric swatches, etc.) to determine what kind of stationery and design would suite your event best?? Well, there is a lot that goes into designing a stationery suite, including talking at length with you regarding your style, likes, dislikes, etc. However, we really do utilize the bits of inspiration that you provide for us to get a better idea of how to make it all come together.

For instance, say you are looking for a nautically inspired invitation set that is classic and preppy, but not necessarily "literally" nautical, but rather you prefer something that simply evokes the aesthetics and elegance of a harbor-side affair?

Well, I have put together some example clippings from one of my favorite catalogues (Serena and Lilly) to show how these elements can come to life within your invitation.

The first swatch shows nautical inspired fabrics, colors and patterns, coupled with the natural textures of a jute rug. Thru the use of rich colors, textured papers and a natural, but elegant touch of raffia you can see that the possibilities of incorporating these "inspirational" elements into your stationery are endless!

DIY boutonnieres for your groomsmen

There is nothing I love more than a vintage-inspired wedding with DIY touches that tie into the whole wedding. When I spotted these "Button Boutonnieres" over on Martha Stewart Weddings, I fell in love! How adorable are these??!! And the possibilities are endless... You could create these little darlings using any fabric and colors that you like, matching them up perfectly with your wedding color story.

Harris and Soulaf's Wedding

Being in the wedding industry, I have the fortunate opportunity of collaborating with some of the industries most talented vendors! Check out this insanely gorgeous wedding designed by Candice Dowling, of Jubilee Events .

Harris and Soulaf's invitations and wedding stationery included a custom designed pocket-folder, inspired by Soulaf's French Moroccan heritage. Their colors were a beautiful shade of purple, coupled with silver, white and a pop of burnt yellow, which were carried throughout the entire event. The results were gorgeous :)

Winter Wonderland Wedding Cakes

When I spotted these beautiful winter-inspired cakes on Martha Stewart Weddings, it made me want to get married all over again, but this time with a beautiful and sparkling winter wedding! I just love the icy colors, elements of nature and sparkling snowflakes. Each one of these "really takes the cake" (pun intended)! And how cute is the groomsmen cake idea? Who doesn't love wedding cake?? And who wouldn't love to take some back with them for a late night snack with coffee?? Yum!

Jessica and Brad wanted a fun, vintage-inspired save the date that reflected their long-distance relationship. Jessica shared that many flights were taken back and forth from New York to Colorado, so they wanted something that would reflect this fun fact. The front of this offset printed, tea-length save the date, features the flight route of the couple using vintage illustrations and an old US map. The back side displays useful information for their guests, informing them of the weekend's events.

I was just recently introduced to a great new band (well new to me) Weinland, out of Portland, Oregon. My amazing long time friend and old college roommate just got engaged (woot! woot!) to one of the oh so talented band members and shared this great video with me. Karen and Aaron are getting married next year on a beautiful vineyard in Oregon and I can't wait to see how it all takes shape! Nothing beats the smell of wine and love in the air ;)

Laura and Matt's Wedding

I had the wonderful pleasure of working with Laura and Matt on their gorgeous Country Club wedding. The invitations were inspired by preppy colors (pink and navy blue), and incorporated a touch of vintage elegance, brought about with a beautiful, custom monogram, playful fonts and a preppy patterend belly band.

It isn't often that I get to see pictures of the bride and groom's big day, so when I do I love to share them. Nicole and her team, at Cosmopolitan Events, did a knock out job designing this wedding! Every touch is pure elegance! I love all of the playful details, including the scrumptious dessert and candy bar (yum)!

The goal is to host a wedding that doesn't break the bank, without looking like a wedding that has cut all the corners. Easy Place Cards!

As a designer who was once a bride myself, I found that one of the most stressful items to deal with as the big day grew nearer, were the escort or place cards! Trying to figure out where everyone is going to sit is an absolute nightmare, especially when you have last minute guest replies or guests who unfortunately fall sick at the last moment and can no longer make it. Then the dilemma is that the table numbers have already been written out on the back of each persons names and you are running dangerously short on blank escort cards! Aahhh!

Well a simple fix that I love for many reasons, is the escort card with mini coin envelope. Not only are these great for last minute changes, because the guests names are on the envelope (not the card), but it is a great way to add extra color and pizazz to your table display!

The idea is simple. The escort cards still have the beautifully printed design, however each card has a table number or name on it, as opposed to a guest's name. Then if John and Jane Smith suddenly get moved at the last minute, you simply take their table card out of their envelopes and switch it with another... problem solved!

The Skinny on Postage

Ok, so most you know by now that on May 11, 2009 the postage stamp increased in price. BUT... what you may not have known is that they also released a new wedding stamp! That's right, so anyone who is sick of the same old purple hearts wedding stamp is in for a treat. Recently released was this charming new stamp, featuring a beautiful, white, tiered wedding cake! Make sure to ask for it next time you are at the post office.

Additionally, while at the post office, I did some asking around of my own and got the skinny on the new postal regulations... here is what I found out:

- Anything less than 1 oz. can be mailed with a Forever Stamp, which is currently $0.42.

- Anything 1 oz. to 2 oz. (which includes most wedding invitations) can be mailed with a special wedding stamp.

Here’s the important part:

- USPS Postage Stamp Rates increased on May 11, 2009.

- The First Class rate increased to $0.44.

- The new wedding stamp was issued at a rate of $0.61.

However, all this being said, it is always best to take a completed/stuffed invitation to at lease 2 post offices for weighing and rate purposes. Two you ask? Yes two! It sounds crazy, but often times different post offices will provide different rates! A bride was recently quoted anywhere from $0.85 to $1.15 to mail her invitation! That is a big difference and the last thing you want is to find that your beautiful invitations have made their way back to your mailbox!

It isn't often that a wedding planner finds themselves sitting in the opposite seat, planning their own wedding! Well, event planner, Candice Dowling of Jubilee Events, is doing just that (Congratulations, Candice!). So what better person to chat with about being an event coordinator turned bride and to ask what advice she can offer from both ends of the stick!

1. What is the number one piece of advice you can give your brides from a wedding coordinator’s perspective?

Enjoy it! I think often times we allow ourselves to get dragged down into the invariable instances that pop up, family dramas that play out, or the stress of planning a wedding. I tell my brides when they reach that point where planning has become stressful, to put things in perspective. Give in to whatever is stressing you out and be committed to enjoying the process. It is really once in a lifetime. Laugh at the mistakes (when you can't fix them!) and remember the reason that brought you here.

2. What is the number one piece of advice you can give your brides from a bride’s perspective?

Be prepared for other's opinions. It is so interesting to me how many people have an invested opinion on our wedding! It means so much to so many, and they all have an opinion on how things should be done. Planning your own wedding is really a crash course in diplomacy. I'm so fortunate because it has really been minimal, but there were a few times where I was amazed at what my grandmother had a very staunch opinion on and what I needed to do to please her.

I'd also say that it is completely natural to fall out of love with your wedding gown after purchasing it. I had a very similar experience and have come to realize it is only natural to have a tinge (or a tidal wave) of buyer's remorse. You wonder -- did I make the decision too quickly? Did I cheat myself out of trying on more dresses? And then you unfortunately find about 12 OTHER dresses that you absolutely LOVE and MUST have. It goes away -- I promise you. There was a reason why you chose the dress you did and you WILL fall in love with it all over again. Hang in there!

3. As a wedding coordinator you are surrounded by creative and talented vendors everyday! However, as a bride the confinement of a budget doesn’t always allow you to utilize all of the tremendous talents made available to you. That being said, Do-It-Yourself projects are a great alternative! What is your favorite DIY project?

My favorite DIY project so far has been our place card table display. I can't give too much away but it includes vintage frames and fabric. DIY projects are great -- I think every bride and groom should have a physical hand in items made for their wedding. It is personal and intimate. But KNOW when to pay a professional to do something and when you are in over your head!

4. What trends are you seeing a lot of these days and how are you incorporating them into your own wedding?

There is no denying that vintage weddings have really made a comeback. I'm incorporating some vintage details into our wedding as the location was built around vintage elements.

I think the most popular trend in weddings is the depth of personalization. The days of the traditional white wedding are really gone -- and now couples do everything and anything. They really are reflections of the couple, their love story, their families and heritage. I love to see couples delve into the details, not being afraid to show off who they are and what they like.

5. As a coordinator planning your own wedding, you must be your most challenging client! How many times have you changed the vision for your big day? And what helps you to focus in and stay organized?

Oh gosh! Good question! A dozen? Maybe two dozen? So awful, I know. I'm exposed to so much eye candy. That, coupled with my Libra tendencies makes being indecisive so easy. Any designer knows that a look develops over time. Rarely do people, out of the gate, have a design and stick with it rigorously throughout the process. The trick is to allow yourself to explore different options, ideas, designs, and themes. It is OKAY to change your mind so be sure to give yourself permission. For me it is especially challenging because the expectation is obviously there and I am not one who doesn’t rise to the occasion. I am SO excited for our wedding (now that I have just recently focused my design choices) and can't wait to share it with everyone!

6. Where do you find inspiration not only for your own wedding, but for those weddings that you plan?

Another fabulous question! I find inspiration EVERYWHERE. I am a very visual person. I find inspiration everywhere, whether it be from a blog, magazine, or a business's brand / marketing material. It could be a shirt, skirt, or dress. A photograph, my lunch, a song lyric. All of those elements inspire me. But, for practicality purpose, I recommend that brides read some of the popular blogs, visit fashion magazines and home décor magazines over bridal. Draw your inspiration from everyday life and take it from there. It is important, too, to define what look your after and then search out where it resides. If you're into a vintage, romantic look than look to Anthropologie catalogs for inspiration. If you are planning an Old Hollywood style wedding, than draw inspiration from vintage movies and Hollywood starlets. Once you define the style, it is easy to figure out where the inspiration will be!

7. And lastly, in your opinion, what is one “must-have” detail that should be a part of every wedding if the budget allows?

Besides a wedding planner? :) This is a tough question, as I can see the benefit and need for almost every beautiful detail! I'll speak from a practicality standpoint on this, and say that the one detail I DON’T recommend you skimp on, compromise on, and if you have extra money you spend on: your photographer. Your wedding will be fabulous with our careful planning, but when the day is over, what will you have to look back with? A professional and amazing photographer is SO NECESSARY in capturing who you are in that very moment. There are no do-overs. Connecticut just happens to have some of the best in the country (we are so fortunate!).

I am always on the look out for beautiful design and color palettes, be it in nature, a gorgeous piece of stationery or even amazing packaging. I came across this beautifully packaged bottle from Lollia and can't stop thinking about it! The soft, feminine colors and whimsical illustration make this a bottle that I would want to keep forever and ever. It reminds me of nostalgic spring delights: white cotton sheets hung to sun-dry on a breezy afternoon, the smell of sweet sea air in the morning and tulips blooming in an array of colors across a bright green grass.

Ok... so you get the picture! I just love this design, bottle, name and so on and so on! Also, don't you just adore these vintage perfume bottles??!! I love the green!

Who doesn't love an advent calendar?? As a little girl, I always had one growing up and to this day, I still look forward to this holiday tradition. So today, I was inspired by the excitement of my little niece and nephew to blog about advent calendars, and boy are there some really great ones out there! Check out some of the creative Christmas calendars:

The first one is just TOO CUTE! These little knit mittens and hats from Garnett Hill are hung by the chimney with care, as they count down to Christmas with little cross-stitched numbers and any goodies that might be stuffed within them.

The second is a garland of hanging pyramid boxes filled with chocolate (yum!) found at Julie Ree and I just LOVE this idea!! And what makes it even better is that you can download a template for these adorable pyramid boxes right here so that you can get creative and design your own.

Beauty ON a Bottle

So while out purusing the liquor store for our annual T&T (Turkey and Tinis) this past week, I stumbled upon this amazing bottle! I am a complete sucker for great design and beautiful pacakging, so of course without even knowing a thing about this particular libation, I snagged it up! Who ever said that label shopping was just for wine :-) This color combination is one of my all time favorites! Red and Teal... and I just love the twist of orange blended in to this particular shade of red. This stunning label is letterpressed onto gorgeous paper with a vintage die-cut, and oh yea... the vodka is pretty tasty as well... and it is organic to boot! I have a feeling that this bottle will be sticking around long after it is consumed.

My absolute favorite time of the year is the holiday season! I love everything about it... the crisp morning air, the first snowfall of the season, family everywhere you look and the sweet and savory smells that waft from the kitchen! When planning your wedding, the table decor gets a lot of attention. There are so many elements that go into the design: from chair covers to candles, linens, runners, table numbers and the floral arrangements. All of these elements coordinate and work together to create a stunning scene as your guests enter the main event room (nothing as stunning as the entrance of you, the bride, of course!) However, one table that should not be overlooked is the dessert table! These days there is much more to had than just the wedding cake (although who doesn't love to indulge in the delicious butter-cream delights?) Although I am completely looking forward to fall and all that comes with it: preppy sweaters, pumpkin spice lattes, apple picking and brisk mornings! I thoroughly enjoyed working on this summer time wedding. The combination of fuschia and kelley green is vivacious, vibrant and fresh; The perfect compliment to this beautiful summer bride!

And my favorite part about this bright, rich pink is that it carries over beautifully to the fall season! Chocolate Brown and Fuschia, creates such a warm and inviting palette... mmmm!

The new Lilah Paper studio is finally taking shape, with the purchase of an old white farm table. I find myself truly lucky to have found this little gem. Oddly enough it had been placed in the women's restroom of my favorite furniture store, Revival. Why it was in the bathroom, no one knew, but it was indeed for sale and is now cleaned up and living in the middle of my custom invitation studio.

The process has been a long and ever-changing one, but starting in July my studio will be open for consultations and I can't wait! Stay tuned for the progression of my studio and also the long-awaited revival of my beautiful Kelsey Star letterpress.

Kansas City Wedding Vendor Meet and Greet

Last night local wedding vendors Lilah Paper (moi), LOVER Cosmetics, La Fete KC and Emily Penke Photography hosted a local Vendor Meet and Greet. Kansas City wedding vendors chalked full of fun ideas and bubbly personalities gathered in the stylish, loft-like studio occupied by Ashely Mauren of LOVER Cosmetics for an evening of social and business networking.

Of Course my company (Lilah Paper) was there with an organically styled invitation display. Featured among some of my most recent jobs was a beautiful, blind-embossed lighthouse invitation designed for one of my September brides in Martha's Vineyard... I wish I was a guest at that one!

I have to say though that my favorite part of the evening's aesthetics had to be the adorable and delicious cake from Natasha's Mulberry and Mott. White cake with raspberry, pistachio cream filling and a beautiful meringue coating whipped into an irresistible bee hive! Yummmmmm!!!! If you haven't tried one of Natasha's cakes, I highly recommend it.

The evening was a great success and I absolutely loved hearing about that different products and services being offered right here in the Kansas City area. Thanks for all those who came out and I hope to see you all again.
